Welcome to 2nd Grade

Welcome to 2nd Grade

In 2nd grade we will be focusing on becoming independent students.

This year, I will be using The Daily Five program in Language Arts. The Daily Five is a literacy structure that teaches independence and gives children the skills needed to create a lifetime love of reading and writing. It consists of five tasks that are introduced individually. The structure of Daily Five is effective, the results are amazing, and the children really look forward to the time.

In science we will focus on Life Cycles, Rocks, Sound, and Force and Motion. Science is a great time to explore while learning. Students will discover new things as we take our science class all around the school for hands on learning experiences. Science will cover the first and fourth quarter of the year. We will also take a field trip to the National Science and Technology museum.

Throughout the second and third quarter, we will cover our social studies units. We will kick it off with small group studies of various Native American groups. That will lead us into a study of Important People in History, US Government, Economics, and Culture.

Math will be full of new and exciting hands on experiences. We will learn how to add and subtract two digit numbers, take surveys and make graphs, count American money, name different 2-D and 3-D shapes, and measure using the metric system and the US system. Lots of fun activities to gear up for third grade!!!

The subject that sets us apart from many other schools is Bible. Our school wide theme for this year is Integrity. Going deeper into what is integrity, we will be studying the lives of various people in the Bible to see how they lived lives of integrity. Before the end of the year, students will know all of the books of the bible, know how to talk to God through prayer, know how to share that salvation only comes through Christ, and they will participate in various acts of service.

I am looking forward to a great year of fun, excitement, and learning!
